The article, Four Effects of the High-Stakes Testing Movement on African American K-12 Students discusses four ways in which high-stakes testing has harmed African American students in particular and recommendations for improving their school experiences. Standardized tests have become the main criteria to which student’s knowledge, teacher efficacy, and school quality are assessed due to No Child Left Behind. The authors discuss that one way African Americans have been harmed through high-stakes testing and standardized assessments is through limited improvement in test scores and dropout rates. Syria now is bogged down in endless killing. Early in the uprising, Western support might have ousted Mr Assad and preserved Syria’s sectarian harmony. , but the West held back. Now, after more than 110,000 people have died during 30 months of violence, it is too late. Like many civil-war leaders Mr Assad prefers to prolong the fighting rather than risk compromise. The rebels, too, battle on in the knowledge that surrender is likely to mean death. Wars occur when negotiations fail or don’t even take place. The talks fail when one or more of the parties refuse to participate in negotiations. There are 4 most common reasons for such refusals- 1) that the refusing party thinks that it can get a better outcome by some other means-usually through force. 2)they fear they will be forced to accept unwanted compromises. If parties think they will have to compromise their values, or give up their chance to obtain their fundamental needs, they will refuse to participate in any negotiation. 3)that parties may refuse to negotiate because they make think that the negotiations are a waste of time and are destined to fail. 4)A final reason why parties may refuse to negotiate is that they are so angry with the other group that they are not even willing to sit down at a table , because they do not want to grant them the legitimacy that such an act would imply. These reasons are not sensible enough to risk thousands of human lives. The main reason why the man got ahead of the mammals is thanks to the intensive development and differentiation of the cerebral cortex. But even the mammals don’t kill each other whereas it’s not uncommon for us to do this. We really differ from mammals and need to understand that the power of the word is immense and the only way for us to remain human beings is to discuss. All these bloodstained wars are not the inability to discuss, but just the unwillingness. While war has created more separation between Arab world and the West, negotiations could have improved the relationships and found long-term solution. the only way to stop the continuous fight in Syria is through negotiations. The Economist suggests that The effort is worth it—about 40% of civil wars end through negotiation. And to pave the way for negotiated solutions, parties should have clear understanding of their interests, acknowledge their interdependence by considering both short-term and long-term interests, and recognize that their interests are not incompatible. The parties should also reject the attempt to frame negotiations as talk with a madman. Negotiations are about finding common ground with the opponent, but not judging personal qualities of the negotiator. And the thing that the parties should understand best of all- is that they are humans and that as leaders they have to protect their people from war. Inside Out Book Reaction free essay sample

My reaction to the book Inside Out by Harry Camisa and Jim Franklin was a good one. I really enjoyed reading this book. I was on and off about a job in corrections and this book is really something I think people interested in this field should read, it is just such an eye opener to what really can happen in this career. I think the part that caught my eye the most, and really held my attention to this book was the stories about executions witnessed. The craziest one was about the first execution witnessed and the sounds of the mans bare chest smacking against the restraint straps while the electricity was sent through his body. I can imagine how horrifying that could’ve been for someone new in the field at that time. Trenton, one of the oldest, and toughest, maximum security facilities. One inmates story who I enjoyed was Kayo. Kayo was a 6 foot 1, 250 pound man known in the streets as â€Å"The King of the Loansharks†. He was one of the most feared men in the New York City area. Kayo was part of the mob since his early twenties and wasn’t the smartest man out there.. in a trial against him murdering a stockbroker he went and represented himself. He had received 30-44 years in the federal pen. Another inmate story which was pretty interesting was the first man Harry had ever seen executed, Theodore Walker. Walker was a young black male who had committed first degree murder on a young woman over robbery. He had been executed 11 1/2 months after the crime was committed. This is what makes me love this book. Justice was delivered so quickly back in the fifties. This story makes you think about, wow 11 1/2 months after? Criminals today are on death row for years, and years. It makes you wonder if the justice system got weaker, or the criminals just got stronger. I love the emotions expressed by Harry who talks about what most other normal humans would probably think when thinking of a person being executed. Harry says he had always pictured this inmates walking to the chair crying, and begging for their lives, but in reality none of them did, most never spoke a word and sat down with ease. When I read about the little to no emotion in the inmates walks to their death, I wondered, do you ever think its to not show weakness with the Warden, and officers around? Or do these men truly feel nothing? I also found it quite odd that the author explains that most men become â€Å"holy†, or rather â€Å"religious† before their execution date arrives. Again brought some questions to my mind, in my opinion I think most practiced religion before being put to death for hopes of acceptance into heaven. The description of the execution room was something that I found very depressing. He says it was brick, with dull green paint, few dim lights, and chairs with a drape hung across .. The men entered through a small metal door. I drew this image up in my head while reading this part. It sounds like something out of a horror movie! Harry states about how theres supposed to be at least 12 witnesses, but more commonly there was around 15-20. It was small, and crowded with people awaiting the â€Å"show. † I think the only part that gives me chills about this book was hearing about the whole idea of the sponge on the head, and the cloth over the face and tied around the neck, that just freaks me out! This book not only tells of stories from the laws point of view but he gives passages from letters, books, and notes left my inmates from what they believed and saw go on in the facility. I personally found the story of the 12 month murder spree of Richard Biegenwald to be very disturbing. I read on the tiny news-printed pictures and seeing the faces of victims so young be taken away by such a horrible tragedy. This man murdered so many people, and escaped the death penalty so many times it just blew my mind. He even was found guilty for killing a municipal prosecutor. Another shocking twist was when officials dug up bodies in backyards and started identifying them. Its freaky that the one news paper article was about a teenage girl who disappeared from Brick Township, I live here! My absolute most favorite thing about this book was the real reprinted articles of news clippings that were included, it made it all SO much realer!!!! I couldn’t imagine opening the Asbury Park Press tomorrow morning and seeing those stories like that.. But its just all so interesting. Its surprising to hear that inmates actually had escaped, or at least dug tunnels and tried too. I feel like to go through all that trouble you must have one pumping adrenaline rush for something on the outside- whether its killing, drugs, or robbery! I could never imagine people actually doing that, I thought this was stuff that happened only in movies, digging tunnels! Like it sounds like SUCH a hassle, just to pretty much guaranteed your going to be captured again shortly anyhow. After reading the book which took me two nights, I talked about it with my mom, and even researched a little more about it. I really, really enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Its such a personal, yet unique story on how this prison experience affects people. I like how Mr. Franklin, and Mr. Camisa tell the story of inmates which whom they developed relationships with while being a guard there, people who they would have never crossed paths with if not for this tough job. Camisa witnessed 13 electrocutions, was taken hostage twice and stopped the escape of 5 violent felons which just blows my mind away. Its crazy to think this man just sat down and writes this so nonchalantly -but these things really happened to him! Nevertheless it was just an amazing story that I am glad to have had the opportunity to read. I already mentioned it to a friend of mine! Nonfiction stories are truly the greatest, but when it comes to a man telling his own experiences in Trenton’s toughest facility, nothing beats that.

Paul's Letter To The Galatians A Humanities Essay That Teaches The Study of The Bible As A Historical Document PAUL'S LETTER TO THE GALATIANS: When Paul attended the Jerusalem Conference in 48 or 49, a decision was made that gentiles would be allowed to become Christians without becoming Jews first (ie. have a circumcision, and follow the Jewish Laws). Paul, being the one that defended the gentile's right to be Christians, became the apostle to the gentiles. Why would Paul, a Jew, want to be an apostle to gentiles? According to him, Jesus appeared to him in AD 32 or 36, and told him to preach the good news to the gentiles (Gal 1:16). Paul uses scripture to explain why gentiles should not be required to be circumcised, or obey Jewish Law; however, there are no direct quotes in scripture that say this. One would wonder why Paul, someone who grew-up in a "good" Jewish family, would not follow in the footsteps of Jewish Christian Missionaries, and require Christian converts to become Jews first. He certainly had to fight to have his belief accepted! In my opinion, Paul tried to follow the example of the original apostles (who knew Jesus) by "converting the multitudes." I think Paul understood human nature better than the other apostles preaching circumcision to the gentiles. Perhaps he thought that gentiles would accept Christianity more easily if it was natural to their lifestyle --I'm sure that the thought of circumcision, and strict dietary laws scared gentiles from Christianity! It seems that the "Judaziers" preached a God that was hard to please. Paul's major problem confronted in his letter to the Galatians is the preachings of the Judaziers. Apparently, men who preach circumcision and the Law had been trying to "pervert" the Galatians, and change their beliefs away from Paul's preachings (Gal 1:7). Paul is so angered that the Galatians are so easily convinced (Gal 1:6), that he actually wishes the Judaziers to mutilate themselves (Gal 5:12)! So, the letter to Galatians uses 4 specific tactics to make Galatians come back to the teachings according to Paul. Paul begins by defending his credibility as an apostle. He writes a brief autobiographical history, stressing that he once persecuted Christians, and then converted when Jesus appeared to him. Also, he tells the outcome of the Jerusalem Conference, probably to convince them that other apostles have accepted his theology. This part of the letter is a bit like a resume of qualifications. I could imagine that the Judiazers who came to Galatia after Paul, denounced him as an apostle: that he never met Jesus, and was not truly educated to be an apostle. Next, Paul writes that "obedience to the Law could not earn approval by God; approval is possible only through faith in Christ" (Perrin, pg. 184). Faith in the crucified Christ will bring righteousness, not the Law (Gal 2:21). Having circumcision will do nothing to make one better in the eyes of God. Then, Paul uses an allegory of The Two Covenants: Abraham's child of a slave woman represents Jerusalem living under the Law, and the child of the free woman represents Jerusalem being free! This tactic, along with Paul's use of familiar Jewish argument style, quoting scripture after scripture to prove a point (Gal 3), are common preaching styles; probably taught to him during whatever rabbinic training he got (perhaps when he spent time with Peter). Paul also tries to appeal to the Helenistic enthusiasm in Christianity in Gal 3:1-5. Although Paul makes some very convincing arguments in favor of his beliefs, I cannot agree with his interpretation of Christ Jesus Christianity. Compare these two quotes from New Testament Scripture (The first is by Paul in Galations. The second is a quote of Jesus in the Book of Matthew.): "knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified." (Gal 2:16) "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.

Even so, electron affinity has practical applications. It is used to measure chemical hardness, a measure of how charged and readily polarized Lewis acids and bases are. Its also used to predict electronic chemical potential. The primary use of electron affinity values is to determine whether an atom or molecule will act as an electron acceptor or an electron donor and whether a pair of reactants will participate in charge-transfer reactions. Electron Affinity Sign Convention Electron affinity is most often reported in units of kilojoule per mole (kJ/mol). Sometimes the values are given in terms of magnitudes relative to each other. If the value of electron affinity or Eea is negative, it means energy is required to attach an electron. Negative values are seen for the nitrogen atom and also for most captures of second electrons. It can also be seen for surfaces, such as diamond. For a negative value, the electron capture is an endothermic process: Eea   −ΔE(attach) The same equation applies if Eea  has a positive value. In this situation the change ΔE  has a negative value and indicates an exothermic process. Electron capture for most gas atoms (except noble gases) releases energy and is exothermic. As discussed, solutes interfere with the shifting of a liquid to a solid state. The colligative properties relate to the number of solute particles in a solution. The greater the solute particles there are in a solution, the greater the decrease in freezing temperature. If 10 grams of sodium chloride were added to 100 grams of water, the freezing point would drop to -5.9 degrees centigrade. However if 10 grams of sucrose were added to 100 grams of water, the water solutions freezing point would only drop to -0.56 degrees centigrade. Why the dramatic difference between the two? After all, the same amount of sucrose and sodium chloride was added to the same amount of water. The answer lies in the number of particles in each solute. There are more particles in 10 grams of sodium chloride then there are in 10 grams of sucrose. Sucrose, C12 H22 O11, has a molecular weight of 342.3 grams per mole. Sodium Chloride on the other hand, has a molecular weight of 58.44 grams per mole. Sodium Ch loride has almost six times as many particles than sucrose has in the same number of grams. Therefore, the sodium chloride solution has a lower freezing point than the sucrose solution (Chemistry Explained, 2010). Not only is it possible to quantify the depression of the freezing point of a solution, it is possible to predict how far the freezing point will be decreased. According to the principles of the colligative properties, it doesnt matter what the physical properties of the solute added to the solution may be. The only determining factor is the number of particles in the solution. Wilfred Owen's Poetry and Pity of War Through his poetry Wilfred Owen wished to convey, to the general public, the PITY of war. In a detailed examination of three poems, with references to others, show the different ways in which he achieved this Wilfred Owen was born in Oswestry, 18th March 1893. He was working in France when the war began, tutoring a prominent French family. When the war started he began serving in the Manchester Regiment at Milford Camp as a Lieutenant. He fought on the Western Front for six months in 1917, and was then diagnosed with War Neurosis (shell shock). Because of this he was sent to Craiglockhart Hospital for treatment. In his stay at Craiglockhart Hospital Wilfred Owen met Siegfried Sassoon. Sassoon was also a poet, and the two became good friends. The two friends compared and edited their poems, and Sassoon introduced Wilfred Owen to some publishers. Whilst he was in Craiglockhart he wrote such poems as "Dulce et Decorem Est" and "Anthem for Doomed Youth." He used his poems as a cathartic experience to help him forget and overcome his experiences on the battlefield. Through a detailed examination of the poems Dulce et Decorem Est,Disabled and Anthem for Doomed Youth with reference to other poems by Wilfred Owen, it can be seen that, although he uses different political forms, styles, and devices, and he addresses his readers from different authorial stances, evoking feelings from great anger and bitterness to terrible sadness; the end result is always the same: he shows the pity of war. Dulce et Decorem Est was written by Wilfred Owen whilst he was having treatment at Craiglockhart, it is one of his most famous poems. Stanza one sets the scene. Owen takes his ti... ...there is no glory involved. This poem gets across the madness of war, and that it must not be continued. Owen expresses feelings of bitter hatred for the war, and he lets those feelings out in Dulce et Decorem est. He is angry that war is allowed to be continued, that the public are lied to, and the conditions the soldiers have to cope with. He was in the war himself, he knew what he was talking about. Owen has a very strong use of imagery, which I think helps get across his message. Although sometimes I feel he can be a bit too bitter, and lose the plot slightly, his poetry is extremely effective. He is asking his reader just to take some time to think about the war, ignore the propaganda and see what is really happening. All of this put together conveys the pity of war, by using graphic imagery, metaphors and similes, and often use of onomatopoeia.
